Courses involving theory and laboratory sessions are held at UNISEL for the first two and a half years running over 5 semesters. During semester 6 in Year 3 the students are given the opportunity to undergo a clinical attachment in a hospital or\ a private pathological laboratory to work under real life clinical conditions.

Clinical Attachment

During the last semester at UNISEL, the student will spend 16 weeks Clinical attachment at a clinical laboratory. Students apply the skills and knowledge gained on campus to the day-to-day laboratory environment. Then practical training cover core disciplines in medical laboratory including clinical biochemistry, haematology, immuno-hematology, and microbiology, The local preceptor who is usually the laboratory manager or senior MLTs from the affiliate laboratory will be responsible for student learning.

At the end of this programme, students should be able to:

  • Perform medical laboratory procedures, validate and refer findings as well as to perform quality control procedures reliably and accurately.
  • Perform quality assurance in routine laboratory analysis.
  • Assist in performing advanced medical laboratory procedures and management of the laboratory.
  • Identify technical errors, perform basic troubleshooting and related problem-solving procedures.
  • Practice according to bio-safety and chemical safety requirements and regulations.
  • Demonstrate sensitivities and responsibilities towards the patients.
  • Strictly adhere to the legal, ethical principles and the professional code of conduct for Medical Laboratory Technologists.
  • Communicate effectively in verbal and written forms with patients, their family/caregiver, peers, healthcare professionals and other healthcare stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate leadership, interpersonal and social skills as well as collaborating with other healthcare professionals.
  • Formulate solutions based on critical thinking and participate in research related to medical laboratory sciences.
  • Demonstrate ICT, entrepreneurial skills in their practice.Demonstrate and apply advanced level knowledge in Medical Laboratory Technologists.

Malaysian candidate

Pass SPM or equivalent with FIVE (5) credits including the following subjects:

  • Mathematics
  • 1 Science subject (Biology/Physics/Chemistry/General Sciences/Applied Science); and
  • Any 3 other subjects;
  • Pass Bahasa Malaysia & English

International candidate

GCE/O-Level or equivalent with FIVE credits (Grade C) in the following subjects:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • 1 Science subject (Biology/Physics/Chemistry/General Sciences/Applied Science); and
  • Any other 2 subjects
  • Proficiency in English (Required for those whose medium of instruction is no in English language.)

    Pass International English Language Testing Services (IELTS) with a minimum of 5.5 orTest of English as a foreign language (TOEFL) with a minimum of 550
