Awareness and Current Scenario in Waste Management Practice in Malaysia

Tuesday, 26.11.2019.  Four representative from the Faculty of Engineering and Life Sciences (FELS) with cooperation with one staff from Faculty of Business and Accountancy (FBA) had successfully organized a seminar titled, Awareness and Current Scenario in Waste Management Practice in Malaysia. This half-day seminar held in UNISEL Shah Alam campus was participated by 45 science teachers and laboratory assistances from 38 secondary schools within the district of Klang, Selangor. Earlier, this research group who was granted with the Bestari Grant (2018) from Universiti Selangor had conducted a comprehensive survey at these schools. On top of that, 35 students from various environmental engineering and health science courses were invited to this seminar.

          

The survey is focused  on analyzing the awareness level of these targeted groups on issue related to controlling and disposing both the liquid and solid wastes especially from their science based laboratories. The seminar had been divided into three main sharing sessions.

The first presentation by Ts. Siti Birkha focused on sharing the outcome of the survey. The second session which was presented by Dr. Mohd Adam bin Adman lingered on the government administration policy related to the waste management and the schedule waste management acts. The final presentation was by the honorable guest, Professor Dr. Azni bin Idris from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).  The issue addressed was an eye opener to all the audiences.

This is particularly on his touch point related to the importance of managing our day to day waste and best practices on handling these waste in securing both human health and the marine life. The event had received positive feedback from the audiences mainly the school teachers. The researchers further aim to continue this kind of program to both PPD and KPM level.
