Biotechnology & Aquaculture

  • Biotechnology is a multi-disciplinary field involving the integration of knowledge and skills drawn from various disciplines, inclusive of Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology and Chemistry. There are great and diverse opportunities in Biotechnology as it combines Science, Engineering and Bioinformatics. Biotechnology can generate economic benefits by improving existing products or producing new ones through various modern technologies in several industries including agriculture, medicine, health care, engineering, environmental sciences, manufacturing and services. This 3-year programme is aimed at providing students with a good foundation of knowledge and hands-on practical experience of the different fields of biotechnology for future careers which include Industrial Biotechnology, Agriculture Biotechnology and Aquaculture Biotechnology.
  • According to the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), Bioinformatics is the field of science in which biology, computer science, and information technology merge to form a single discipline. Major activities in bioinformatics are to develop software tools for analyses of biological data and to generate useful biological knowledge. The students enrolled in this programme will gained knowledge in both field of information technology (IT) and biotechnology.
  • The study of biodiversity reflects the extent of the interest of a nation in its natural resources and heritage, which is considered as a crucial portion of the national wealth. Since Malaysia is one of the twelve mega-diversity centre of the earth, much emphasis should be put on understanding, preserving and utilizing the biodiversity of our biotic resources. Students are required to attend an internship programme to familliarize with the actual working environment.
  • Diploma in Aquaculture is 2 ½ years course, conducted in 7 semesters and students need to accomplish 90 credit hours. Aquaculture is now becoming a promising sector as its provide important source of food that is available for human consumptions nowadays. This program was created to produce student with the ability to construct knowledge and acquire understanding on the concepts of aquaculture and apply these understandings to interpret, incorporate and expand their knowledge in real life applications as well as to equip the students with professional manner good ethics and leadership qualities.
